DIY is fine at $0 ARR
Squarespace and Webflow are genuinely good tools. For the right stage of business. Once you are billing clients, the tool you used to build your site is visible. And it sends a signal you probably do not want to send.
The uncomfortable truth
People who evaluate vendors for a living can spot a Squarespace template in about three seconds. It is not that those sites look bad. It is that they look like every other small business that signed up for a trial and picked a theme. When your prospect is deciding between you and a competitor, that signal matters.
ADA compliance: where template builders fall short
Website accessibility is a legal requirement under the ADA, and courts apply it to business websites. Squarespace and Webflow sites built from templates frequently fail WCAG 2.1 AA: color contrast baked into the theme, non-semantic markup generated by visual editors, keyboard traps in custom components, and no structured heading hierarchy.
You can fix some of this manually, but the template is working against you by default. Our output starts from semantic Next.js components with proper ARIA labels, focus management, and contrast ratios. The site that ships is accessible. You do not have to audit it afterward.
The monthly fee adds up.
Squarespace starts at $23/mo, Webflow at $23/mo for basic sites. Over 3 years that is $800+, and at the end of it you still do not own the code. A fixed-price refresh is a one-time investment. You get a Next.js codebase you can host anywhere for ~$20/mo.
You should not be building your website.
If your time is worth anything, spending 40 hours learning a drag-and-drop builder and customizing templates is a terrible trade. You have an existing site with content that works. The job is modernizing the presentation, not rebuilding from scratch yourself.
SEO on DIY builders is an uphill battle.
Core Web Vitals, proper semantic HTML, schema markup, sitemap generation. These are built into our output by default. On Squarespace and Webflow, SEO is largely an afterthought that requires apps, workarounds, and manual configuration.
